When Esquire Comes Calling

Every once in a while, something happens that makes us stop and take a moment to appreciate just how far T.A.C.T. has come.

Recently, the team at Esquire Magazine reached out to us because they wanted to tell the story of what happens after tragedy—the work that takes place quietly, often behind closed doors, when families are facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

We were honored. And, honestly, a little humbled.

What started as a family business built around the simple belief that the clean-up should never be the last memory of a loved one has grown into something we never could have imagined would attract the attention of a publication like Esquire. They didn't just want to write about what we do. They wanted to understand why we do it—and the people behind the work.

The result is an eight-page feature in the magazine.  And for those keeping score… Brad Pitt only got two more pages than we did in the printed edition. So, naturally, we're feeling pretty good about ourselves.

Jokes aside, having Esquire approach us to tell our story is something we don't take lightly. Our work isn't glamorous, and it certainly isn't easy. But it is meaningful. Every call represents a person, a family, or a community that needs someone to step in when they don't know what to do next.

We are incredibly grateful to the Esquire team for taking the time to see beyond the work itself and to tell the story with such care and depth. And we are equally grateful to the family, friends, clients, first responders, and countless others who have supported T.A.C.T. along the way.

The Story Behind the Story

One of the most interesting things to come out of the Esquire article hasn't actually been the article itself. It's what people have asked us since they read it.  We've had people tell us they had no idea this industry even existed. We've had questions about what actually happens when we arrive at a scene, what our technicians encounter, how we approach particularly difficult projects, and what it's really like to do this work day after day.

But the question we hear most often—despite the fact that it's discussed in the Esquire article—is: “How did you get into this business?”

We tell the story often, because it's the story that started all of this.  It begins with David's father, Gerald.  Gerald's passing was the catalyst that eventually led us here. And there's something about that story that still amazes us. A difficult father-son relationship, an unexpected loss, and a decision that seemed almost insignificant at the time ultimately became the starting point for a career neither of us could have imagined.

Today, we love telling the stories of Gerald—not just the circumstances surrounding his passing, but the stories that make him a person rather than simply the beginning of our business story.  And that's really what people are asking when they want to know more about T.A.C.T.  They aren't necessarily asking about blood, biohazard equipment, or the mechanics of cleaning. They're asking about the people.

Over the years, we've collected countless stories from our work. Some are heartbreaking. Some are surprising. Some are difficult to believe. And some have stayed with us long after we've left the property.  We do share some of those experiences—but always with the purpose of educating people about this work and helping them understand what families and communities may face after a traumatic event. The details and identities remain confidential because, at the end of the day, these aren't just “jobs.” They're people's lives.

Perhaps that's why the reaction to the Esquire article has meant so much to us. It opened a door for people to see a little more of the world of T.A.C.T.—but it also reminded us that the most interesting part of this business has never really been the cleaning.  It's the people.
